What is the NMC OSCE Exam?
All overseas nurses need to complete two tests (CBT & OSCE) known as the Test of Competence (ToC) set by the NMC. The OSCE (The Objective Structured Clinical Examination) is part two of the ToC. In this test, examiners will assess the candidate’s communication skills and knowledge of the clinical area. They will check the candidate’s practical skills against the current UK pre-registration standards.
How many stations are in the OSCE exam?
There are ten stations in the Adult Nursing OSCE. Four stations test APIE (Assessment, Planning, Implementation and Evaluation) skills. For Adult Nursing, the scenarios given at the APIE stations can include the following:
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Anxiety and Depression
- Asthma
- Chronic Heart Failure
- Community Assessment Diabetes
- Ectopic Pregnancy
- End of Life
- Fall and Fracture
- Hernia
- Homelessness
- Pneumonia
- Subdural Haematoma
A further four stations will test you on two pairs of skills together. Finally, two silent written stations will assess you on professional values and behaviours, and on evidence-based practice.
